The neonatal service is a dynamic, evolving service that is part of the largest maternity service in the UK. We are the only neonatal service to combine medical and surgical neonatal intensive care, a regional cardiac service and the second largest ECMO service in the world within one Trust and admit over 1000 babies and deliver over 11,000 cot days care annually.
As the lead centre for the Central Newborn Network (CNN) we take referrals from Leicestershire, Rutland, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, and Lincolnshire with additional babies arriving from the West Midlands, Staffordshire and Derbyshire. We take admissions post ECMO and post cardiac surgery from Glenfield Hospital. A comprehensive neonatal surgical service and an above average number of genetic conditions increases the range of patients seen.
We host the CenTre neonatal transport team which provides transport for all the units in the Central Newborn Network and Trent Perinatal Network. Last year, the service undertook more than 1250 transfers supervised by the Neonatal transport consultants, making it the second busiest service in the country.
Antenatal counselling in conjunction with our fetal medicine colleagues means that our involvement with families starts antenatally. After discharge from the unit we see babies in neonatal follow up clinics and specialist chronic lung disease clinics and neurodevelopmental follow up clinics. Our neonatal outreach team can help parents once they have gone home.
The service is currently on two sites LRI & LGH with all intensive care being provided at LRI. A brand new £9.3 million neonatal unit opened at LRI on the 7th September 2010. This provides 18 intensive / high dependency cots and 6 special care cots. There are plans to open a further 8 intensive / high dependency cots and 6 more special care cots in the near future. The unit at LGH has 12 special care cots. All consultants work at both LRI and LGH.
